These simple steps can avoid the most common kinds of back pain.
1] Initial Thoughts:
Know This: "Back Pain can, mostly, be avoided."
It’s all mechanics.
Pay attention to:
How you lift things.
Don’t sit in the same position for extended periods of time.
Build a stronger core.
Listen to Dr. Uppal talk about this: (the segment is 47 seconds!)
2] Let’s talk: "Pilates & Yoga!"
As a Doctor, I want you to know this:
Pilates and Yoga are great exercises in preventing back pain. Working that core, building those accessory muscles, and remaining active are key drivers in maintaining good back health.
Main messages
“Pilates-based exercises can be proposed as a therapeutic option in patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (CNLBP).
It has been recommended that sessions should last about 60 minutes, with a frequency of two and three times a week, and be supervised by qualified instructors.”
There is compelling evidence that pilates and yoga also have beneficial effects for people of all ages. Including those with chronic back pain!
3] You Need: “Back Trivia!”
For your next Jeopardy! Session —
Smallest Back Muscle:Multifidus. (pronounced Mul-tif-ah-dus). Use it in a sentence: Gosh, your multifidus is so tiny!
Longest Back Muscle:Erector Spinae. This muscle group helps in a lot of our heavy lifting.
Widest Back Muscle:Latismus Dorsi. Strengthening this can improve your golf game.
4] Discharge:
Most back pain is actually caused by how we move around in the world. We have many tools in our kit for the management and prevention of back pain.
Transcript of the Audio Segment:
Bannister here! Let's continue to Think Healthy. Most people seem to think that back pain occurs when there is an injury to our spinal cord. That's actually not true.
Doctor Puja: "Rather, most back pain comes from injuries to our muscles and ligaments and not our spinal cord. When you pick up stuff with improper lifting techniques, have a few extra pounds on ya. And, if you're sitting around at your job for long periods of time, you're likely going to have some back pain."
Bannister: And that was Doctor Puja. Having said that, what are some of the more common ways of treating back pain?
Doctor Puja: "Home stretches, medications like ibuprofen, and hands-on treatments like OMT. If that pain continues, it's time to talk to your health care team.”
